a Moo-Moo Classrooms On Wheels (COW) is the umbrella
organization supporting three COWs: · Classroom
On Wheels (COWPreK) · Computers
On Wheels (COWLAB) COWPreK
Modeled after a 25-year-old program in rural Tennessee, Classroom
On Wheels was created in 1992 with the help of the community and United Way of
Southern Nevada. COWPreK uses old school buses transformed into
self-contained classrooms and painted to resemble Holstein cows. The
program provides free, bilingual (English-Spanish) preschool classes for
at-risk, underserved children in low-income neighborhoods all over Southern
Nevada. Using the High/Scope method, COWPreK teachers help children
develop perceptual, language, fine and gross motor, counting, and
reading-readiness skills. COWPreK currently serves 350 children in 21 different
classes (16 children per class) on 8 cow-spotted buses.
Classes are offered twice a week for 2½ hours per class. Parents of the COWPreK students also receive 2 hours of
parenting instruction each month. COWLAB
When the teachers of COWPreK started providing preschool education for at-risk
children ten years ago, the staff realized that the education provided would
enhance the lives of the children it was serving even more if it could
simultaneously educate those students’ parents. Computers On Wheels was
launched in 1996 in order to meet the educational needs of the parents of the
children served through COWPreK. COWLAB helps parents become the primary
advocates of their children’s education. Making use of an old
school bus renovated to serve as a fully functional, mobile computer lab, COWLAB
provides adult students with the training necessary for improving English
proficiency, computer literacy, and employment opportunities. COWLAB
provides these parents with GED, ESL and life skills training on the computers
on our mobile computer labs. Our MissionClassroom
on Wheels is committed to providing highest needs preschool children and their
families free quality educational services to empower them to succeed in life.
